Young Enterprise Scheme

About The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is a programme delivered at Years 12 and 13 for students to get the chance to set up and run their own business for a year.

YES students will:

  • Set up their company
  • Create real products or services
  • Compile and implement a business plan
  • Make real profit or loss

For all students, the business knowledge they develop is supplemented by skills in teamwork, communication, problem solving, negotiation, and decision making. Students learn through experiencing the value of innovative thinking and develop enterprising attributes.

YES can be used towards:

  • Business Studies Achievement Standards (Levels 2 and 3)
  • YE Certificate (24 credit equivalents at Level 3)
  • NZIM Paper 836

Each student YES company can also enter regional and national competitions, culminating in national awards where the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year is announced.

2017 Young Enterprise Scheme

Well done to all the Teams from the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme for 2017.

The Chamber delighted to host the Otago Regional Young Enterprise Scheme Awards last week to celebrate all the successes from the years efforts!

Special Mention to, Brighter Books from OBHS, The Aditi Project from OGHS and Eliminar from Westmount School for winning prizes throughout the evening

And a huge congratulations to the overall Otago Regional Winner, The Ice Cream Gals from Columba College

It is inspiring to see young entrepreneurs working together and learning vital business skills.

The Young Enterprise Scheme encourages senior secondary school students working in a team to create, run and liquidate a company throughout the course of an academic school year. Each team is supported in its enterprise by the Enterprise NZ National Office, a local regional coordinator, the school it operates in, a Young Enterprise Teacher and a Business Mentor.

The programme is cross curricular and students can expect to benefit from:

  • Interaction with positive business role models
  • Hands on experience for the development of business competencies
  • Improved skills in team work, communication, decision making, planning, time management and leadership.

Students not only end the year having learnt some life and business skills, but they have had the opportunity to earn profits, earn scholarships and prizes, obtain a director’s certificate and will have added value to their CV and future employment prospects.

We look forward to next years invigorated 2018 Young Enterprise Scheme and encouraging more of our young people into business entrepreneurship.

Thank you to our local sponsors for their time and support of YES 2017
