Becoming Darkness | Dunedin Dream Brokerage
By Dunedin Dream Brokerage | Posted: Friday June 14, 2019
The latest Dunedin Dream Brokerage project to occupy empty retail spaces Becoming Darkness is both exhibition and event with live performances, film screenings and portrait photography sessions.
The Otago Chamber of Commerce has provided administration support to the Dunedin Dream Brokerage since late 2018 and is glad to extend our relationship into helping promote events that the Brokerage supports.
The Dunedin Dream Brokerage utilises empty environments urban and retail in order to re-purpose them for artistic endeavours. They do so by working with owners and artists to temporarily broker space that can be used for creative projects with aims to support artists, reduce vacant space and celebrate our city. A new immersive multimedia installation Becoming Darkness celebrates Dunedin’s shadowy
long nights. Using painting, photography, sculpture, video and sound work to celebrate the
darkness: three local artists present a gothic carnivalesque side of Dunedin. Connect with their
events, book to sit for a portrait or explore their transformed spaces while waiting for your bus.
Combining the talents of three local artists and numerous collaborators, Becoming Darkness is a project built around a shared aesthetic that is dark both tonally and thematically. Esta de Jong, Brendan Philip (both past residents of the inimitable and recently closed None Gallery) and Lance Strickland present a black-heavy aesthetic sensibility to celebrate a lesser-known local mythology – but one with deep roots – proposing that darkness can hold beauty and allure.
“Drawing in experimental sound performers and film makers through a series of events adds spectacle and a sense of curated carnival...an art show that can be explored like a haunted house", said artist Brendan Philip.
“A predominance of black finds its way into the art, music, fashion, and literature of this place. There can be seen at work a metaphysics born of a bleak climate, rugged landscape, dominating architectural heritage, and post-colonial alienation.“
Portrait photography sessions on the 27th of June will be available to book at the event opening or online, with subjects able to return and see the result of their sitting amongst the artworks from the 2nd of July.
