Four Thousand Elephants 4KT Project
By Dunedin Dream Brokerage | Posted: Friday May 31, 2019
Thanks to Dunedin's own Stitch Kitchen and Dunedin Dream Brokerage our city is going to have 4000 toy elephants to signify the 4000 tonnes of textile waste sent to the Green Island landfill every year.
The Otago Chamber of Commerce has provided administration support to the Dunedin Dream Brokerage since late 2018 and is glad to extend our relationship into helping promote events that the Brokerage supports.
The Dunedin Dream Brokerage utilises empty environments urban and retail in order to re-purpose them for artistic endeavours. They do so by working with owners and artists to temporarily broker space that can be used for creative projects with aims to support artists, reduce vacant space and celebrate our city. For more information about the Dunedin Dream Brokerage check out their website: https://www.dunedindreambrokerage.nz/about
The latest installation launched by the Brokerage is the Four Thousand Elephants 4KT project. Globally more clothes are being made than ever before with an estimated 150 billion items a year, many of which are thrown away after only worn a few times.
As part of the project, workshops will be held for anyone to attend that will provide skills in working with fabrics, cutting, sewing by machine and by hand, stuffing, and much more. These will be held in a pop-up space, starting on Queen's Birthday and running for the two following weekends.
So get involved in a great cause and learn some great skills while you do it!
