A huge congratulations to Abalro for being awarded joint winners of the Global Kaitiakitanga Project!
To determine 2021's winning company, Abby, Alex and Robert from Abalro took part in a Dragon's Den style event on Thursday, 9 September. As winners of the Global Kaitiakitanga Project, they will travel to Expo 2020 (delayed due to COVID-19) in Dubai to showcase their products in the New Zealand Pavilion. They will also act as New Zealand’s youth ambassadors at other youth and innovation-related activities at the Expo (subject to international travel restrictions).
Abalro's Business Background
In 2020 Abalro was the top-ranked Otago company in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). Abby, Alex and Robert went on to be placed second overall nationally. Their company imported a barberry from Iran and dehydrated it to create a powder to combat acne.
In 2021 (as Year 13 students) Abalro returned to the competition with an additional product for their barberry range ... a barberry kombucha.
