The Dunedin Botanic Garden and 4Trades Apprenticeships are pleased to announce that last week Morgan Hampton won the 2018 Young Amenity Sector Horticulturist of the Year, and will now compete at the Young Horticulturist of the Year National Competition in November this year.
Morgan recently completed his apprenticeship with 4Trades and the Botanic Garden, graduating with a Level 4 advanced certificate in horticulture.
Collections Supervisor Barbara Wheeler said “Congratulations were in order for Morgan, but also to everyone [there] who, whether in a small way or large, had a hand in his training and mentoring throughout his apprenticeship and over the past few months as he geared up for the Amenity Competition”.
Dunedin Botanic Garden had always been focused on training and career succession. It wanted to train to the best of its ability now so the parks and gardens were in ''good fettle'' in the future, Ms Wheeler said.
Morgan’s success follows Graduate Pippa Lucas, who took third place in the 2017 Young Horticulturist Awards.
