Westpac Supreme Business Excellence Award

Whitestone Cheese Co

Whitestone Cheese of North Otago was founded in 1987 as a diversification during the 1980’s rural downturn and a series of crippling droughts. Bob Berry’s experience in livestock trading was quickly applied to cheese trading. The original factory was set up in Oamaru in a converted garage with milk sourced from local farms and one variety, Whitestone Farmhouse was launched.

The business slowly grew as an extension of the farming operation until today’s purpose built factory was commissioned in 1998. Son Simon joined the business bringing a new set of skills and the farm was sold to concentrate on growing the exciting family enterprise. Simon now oversees the business management, cheese making team, marketing and production.

The factory employs over 50 staff, produce over 20 different varieties of cheese and supplies products into domestic retail and food service markets. Internationally, Whitestone currently exports to Australia, Fiji, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Qatar and the USA. The factory in Oamaru includes a tourist viewing gallery and cheese store.

2010 OBIZ Awards

The Otago Chamber of Commerce and Westpac are proud to have brought you these awards over the last 10 years. Held biennially since 1998 the business excellence awards (OBIZ) are designed to celebrate and recognise business excellence in the Otago region. The Gala dinner and ceremony was held at the Dunedin Town Hall on Friday 26 November 2010.  Over 320 local business community leaders attended this black-tie event.

Speakers included Business Awards committee chairperson Ali Copeman; Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull; and Westpac Head of Business Banking South Island John Brophy.  The speakers highlighted the strength and quality of the business entrants and the strong foundation of specialised companies in Otago.

Awards chief judge Sir Robin Gray headed a team of judges who had the impressive task of reviewing the 663 nominations.  Sir Robin reiterated the impressive quality and diversity of Dunedin and Otago entrants.

Congratulations to Supreme Award Winner for 2010

The Emerson Brewing Company Ltd

Richard Emerson, the Master Brewer and Managing Director, developed a passion for brewing in the late 1980s and convinced his father, family and friends to help set up this unique brewing business. Their goal was to produce premium beers, introducing New Zealanders to a new experience of flavours not previously known and to be the best microbrewery the country and to be recognised within their industry. Obviously they have succeeded. Their dedication, innovation and entrepreneurship has achieved countless accolades by their peers and seen significant and sustainable demand throughout the years. The company is now a major brand that is recognised nationally and internationally for their superior range of quality premium beers by their consumers and their industry.

Westpac Supreme Business Excellence Award

Nichols Garden Group

Alan Dippie, Managing Director of Nichols Garden Group is presented with the Supreme Business Excellence award by Mark Bolton, Head of Westpac Business Banking, South Island.

Nichols was founded in the 1860s and is one of the oldest companies in Otago and Southland. Throughout the century it has been involved in a diverse range of commercial activities, from whaling and coastal shipping to salmon and chicken farming. In 1976 the Nichols family diversified into gardening after its stock food manufacturing factory was destroyed by fire.

Starting with a staff of 3 it now employs 71 ‘valuable' team members and in just over 30 years it has grown to become Otago and Southland's leading garden business. Nichols survival and growth has been characterised by a willingness and ability to adapt and change and seek new opportunities. This rare combination of both determination and entrepreneurship has made Nichols Garden Centre what it is today.
