Computers in Homes
One of the initial projects that the Digital Office has started in Dunedin is the Computers in Homes initiative which is a project working particularly well in low-decile schools.
For the project to be successful they are dependent upon finding computers that are no longer required. The Digital Office has been fortunate to receive donated computers from business and educational institutions across Dunedin but due to a growing demand there is a need for more.
Once a donated computer is received, the old data is removed and a standard set of applications installed.
All the donated machines are used to train the parents and school children who are part of the scheme.
If you would like more information click here for a flyer on the scheme which also details what is required in terms of computer specification.

Young Farmer of the Year award
The Grand Final of the National Bank Young Farmer Contest is being held in Dunedin from 23-26 May 2012. The Ultimate Rural Challenge is the pinnacle for Young Farmers; the Grand Final pits the best contestant from each of the seven regions against each other for three days of intense competition.
The Official Opening starts at 12.30pm on Wednesday 23rd May and is a great chance for the public to witness country coming to town and to meet the seven hopeful Grand Finalists. The following day the Technical Challenges will be held at Invermay Agriculture Research Centre and is free for the public to attend. New Zealand Young Farmers National Fencing and Stockjudging Competitions will also take place at the Technical Day. During the course of the Technical Challenge Day, the contestants will complete the AGMARDT Agri-business Challenge and the Lincoln University Agri-growth Challenge.
The AGMARDT Agri-business Challenge requires the contestants to present their findings from their Market Innovation Project (which they have completed prior to the Grand Final week) to a panel of three judges. They will also have to complete a Strategic Business Plan including technical agricultural and financial papers. The Lincoln University Agri-growth Challenge will test the Grand Finalists on their communication skills. Each contestant will be questioned by a panel of three judges in the Interview section and they will be put through their paces in a Human Resource Challenge.
The Edgar Centre will host the 2012 Speeches Dinner. The theme for this year is “The Great Outdoors”, so get your tickets, get your thinking caps on and show us your costumes! At this themed dinner the Grand Finalists will be required to deliver a three minute speech on a topic given to them earlier in the day, winners of various other awards will also be announced.
On Friday, the Practical Day will be held at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. There will be a number of different competition aspects to the day for the Contestants while NZ Young Farmers, TeenAg, and AgriKidsNZ members will also be battling it out in their own competitions throughout the day. A Farmers' Market will also be on offer for spectators to indulge in some great local products and treats. The Ravensdown Agri-skills Challenge requires each contestant to complete practical challenges focusing on aspects of agriculture commonly carried out in New Zealand. The challenges test specialised skill knowledge and the contestants ability to perform tasks to great detail or show their depth of knowledge. These challenges are top secret until the day so the contestant must prepare for any eventuality.
The Silver Fern Farms Agri-sports Challenge consists of two parts - Head to Head and the popular Agri-sport. The Head to Head challenges bring all of the contestants together in one central location to compete against each other on a practical task. These are held at various times during the morning and will engage the audience as it breaks up the Agri-skills challenges with a spark of action. The feature event of the day is undoubtedly the fast paced Agri-sport. The contestants compete side-by-side through a series of agricultural related tasks in a test of speed, skill and stamina. Competing not only against each other, but also against the clock! However, contestants must be mindful that most of the points are allocated for quality of workmanship so they must maintain a high standard under the pressure of time. First to finish does not necessarily assure victory as marks can be deducted for poor quality workmanship.
The Televised Grand Final Show will be held at the Edgar Centre on Saturday night. Witness the excitement and tension as the Grand Finalists enter the home strait of a very gruelling week. Contestants will face buzzer rounds and observation tests. Challenge by Challenge the winners will be announced in order to find the 2012 Contest Champion. Following the formalities, guests will be able to let their hair down and celebrate with the Contest Champion for 2012 while bringing a close to another National Bank Young Farmer Contest.
The Grand Final Show is televised live on TVNZ 7 at 7.05pm and repeated later that evening on TV One at 10.15pm. It will be watched by approximately 300,000 viewers who will tune in to watch the Contest’s 32nd Televised Show.
