The Otago Chamber of Commerce and Westpac are proud to have brought you these awards over the last 10 years.
Held biennially since 1998 the business excellence awards (OBIZ) are designed to celebrate and recognise business excellence in the Otago region.
The Gala dinner and ceremony was held at the Dunedin Town Hall on Friday 26 November 2010. Over 320 local buysiness community leaders attended this black-tie event.
Speakers included Business Awards committee chairperson Ali Copeman; Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull; and Westpac Head of Business Banking South Island John Brophy. The speakers highlighted the strength and quality of the business entrants and the strong foundation of specialised companies in Otago.
Awards chief judge Sir Robin Gray headed a team of judges who had the impressive task of reviewing the 663 nominations. Sir Robin reiterated the impressive quality and diversity of Dunedin and Otago entrants.

The winners of the Business Skill Award will be judged for the Westpac Supreme Business Excellence Award.
There is also a special award - the City of Dunedin Mayor’s Award for Business Personality.

Nichols was founded in the 1860s and is one of the oldest companies in Otago and Southland. Throughout the century it has been involved in a diverse range of commercial activities, from whaling and coastal shipping to salmon and chicken farming. In 1976 the Nichols family diversified into gardening after its stock food manufacturing factory was destroyed by fire.
Starting with a staff of 3 it now employs 71 ‘valuable' team members and in just over 30 years it has grown to become Otago and Southland's leading garden business. Nichols survival and growth has been characterised by a willingness and ability to adapt and change and seek new opportunities. This rare combination of both determination and entrepreneurship has made Nichols Garden Centre what it is today.
